Hours after Miyanganj’ to ‘Mayaganj’ proposal, another UP Minister says rename ‘Mirzapur’ district to ‘Vindhya Dham’

A gram panchayat in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao has proposed to rename a block in the district from ‘Miyanganj’ to ‘Mayaganj’, this is the latest in a series of proposed name changes across the state, NDTV reported.

“Miyan” is a term used as a prefix or a suffix in Muslim names in India and other places.

In a video statement with NDTV, Unnao’s District Magistrate, Ravindra Kumar, said, “The gram panchayat has suggested changing the name to ‘Mayaganj’. We have sent this proposal to the UP government for the next step.”

Hours after the proposal of ‘Miyanganj’ to ‘Mayaganj’, another minister demanded to rename Mirzapur, district next to Varanasi, which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha seat. The famous ‘Maa Vindhya Vasini’ Temple, a popular pilgrimage spot is in Mirzapur.

Minister Rama Shankar Singh Patel, in a video statement with NDTV has said, “I want that Mirzapur should be known as ‘Vindhya Dham’. Faizabad has been renamed Ayodhya and our government is investing crores of rupees in infrastructure at the Vindhya Dham in Mirzapur, so I hope that Mirzapur can be renamed. This is very important and is a matter of public sentiment.”

A local body’s chief had confirmed that proposal to rename UP’s Aligarh to Harigarh was cleared by the zila panchayat ten days ago. The proposal has been sent to the Yogi Adityanath government.

If the UP overnment clears the move to rename Aligarh, it would add to a long list of renamed places in the BJP ruled state. One of the most prominent renaming was from Allahabad to Prayagraj in January 2019.

In November 2018, the state declared that the Faizabad would be renamed as Ayodhya, the same name as the temple town which is located 100 km from Lucknow.
