UP By-Election Showdown: High Court Intervenes, Election Commission Under Scrutiny

The Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench has sought a response from the Election Commission regarding the Milkipur by-election. The court’s decision comes after a PIL was filed.

Justice AR Masoodi and Subhash Vidyarthi ordered the Election Commission’s advocate to obtain instructions and respond by November 12.

The PIL, filed by Prabhunath Tiwari, demands timely conduct of the by-election. The Election Commission had delayed announcing the by-election date due to a pending election petition filed by BJP leader Gorakhnath.

In other news, Congress announced it won’t field candidates in nine UP by-elections and will support India Alliance candidates. Congress’ UP chief Ajay Rai stated the decision prioritizes protecting the Constitution over party interests.

Congress’ national secretary Avinash Pandey said the party will support India Alliance candidates, emphasizing the need to safeguard the Constitution, social harmony, and brotherhood.

Voting for the nine UP seats will take place on November 13, with results announced on November 23.
