UP’s GDP Plunged Even before Pandemic; State Puts Out Ads that Per Capita Doubled in Four years of BJP

The growth rate of Uttar Pradesh’s state Gross Domestic Product has crashed down by a huge margin. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the state’s GDP has been plunging. However, UP government has still put out front-page advertisements in leading newspapers that their per capita income has doubled in four years under the governance of BJP.

UP’s gross state domestic product (GSDP) increased at a compound growth rate of only 1.95% per annum from 2017 to 2021. In contrast, the growth rate was 6.92% from 2012 to 2017 during the previous state government, according to The Wire.

The per capita income of Uttar Pradesh was barely half (Rs 41,023) of India’s average (Rs 86,659) in the year 2019-20. UP’s per capita income (at 2011-12 prices) is ranked 32 out of 36 states and Union Territories.

As per reports, there is a colossal failure of Adityanath government policies as the overall unemployment increased 2.5 times and youth unemployment by nearly 5 times compared to 2012.

Youth unemployment is much worse than overall unemployment, as per reports, for those with secondary education, it tripled; with higher secondary, it quadrupled. While the unemployment for graduates rose from 21% to 51%, for those with technical diplomas/certificates, it increased from 13 to 66% and for technical graduates from 19 to 46%.

During the Yogi Adityanath government, manufacturing also showed negative growth of 3.34%  as compared to 14.64 % during the previous regime.
