Madras High Court upholds actress Jayaprada’s Jail sentence

In a recent legal development, the Madras High Court has refused to quash the conviction of actress and former MP Jayaprada.

The court’s verdict was in connection with a case involving the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and the Jayaprada Theater on General Patters Road, Chennai.

ESIC had filed a complaint against Jayaprada and other stakeholders of the theater for failing to pay the ESI contribution deducted from the salaries of theater employees. On August 10, the Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court convicted the actress and her firm’s partners under the ESIC Act. The Magistrate Court sentenced him to simple imprisonment of six months along with a non-bailable warrant.

The former MP had filed an appeal in the Madras High Court challenging the jail sentence imposed by the magistrate court. The High Court eventually dismissed the actress’ plea and upheld the six-month jail term and non-bailable warrant.

High Court Justice G. Jayachandran directed the actress to surrender before the Egmore Magistrate Court within 15 days. The judge directed the magistrate’s court to grant bail to Jayaprada if he obeys the court’s orders and also directed him to appear before the court in person within the next 15 days and pay a surety bond of Rs 20 lakh
