What is the discussion between Sonia Gandhi and Congress leaders from Karnataka to Rajya Sabha?

The Congress, which is in power in two South Indian states, is hoping to win more seats in South India in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, it is learned that the state leaders are mulling to nominate senior party leader Sonia Gandhi from Karnataka to the Rajya Sabha.

Congress, which lost three states of North India (Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh) in the five state elections held as the Lok Sabha elections were near, gained power in two southern states.

Congress has formed the government in Karnataka and Telangana. Also, it is working as an ally of the ruling DMK party in Tamil Nadu. In addition, it has maintained its own charisma in Goa, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Thus, the party is poised to re-establish its old dominance in all these southern states, except Andhra Pradesh.

Apart from winning more Lok Sabha seats in the states of Karnataka and Telangana, the party also aims to win more seats in other southern states. At the same time, the BJP has again started vote banking with Modi’s image. Congress has a challenge to beat and win.

For that, Congress is making various strategies. Apart from that, state leaders including AICC President Mallikarjuna Kharge, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar are discussing making Sonia Gandhi the representative of South India in the Rajya Sabha. It is said that Sonia Gandhi has proposed to present a proposal in this regard.

Currently, Sonia Gandhi is representing the Rae Bareli constituency of Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha. There are chances that she will not contest the next Lok Sabha elections. There are rumors that he may leave the Rae Bareli constituency to his daughter Priyanka Gandhi. Thus, it is known that the leaders of the state have come forward to elect him to the Rajya Sabha.

Thus, on April 2, 2024, three Congress Rajya Sabha members from Karnataka – Dr L Hanumantiah, Syed Naseer Hussain, and GC Chandrasekhar – are retiring.

The Congress, which has 136 MLAs in the state, will retain those three seats. However, there is news that there is a discussion going on at the party high command level about renominating those three to the Rajya Sabha.

If Sonia Gandhi accepts the nomination proposal from Karnataka to the Rajya Sabha, none of the three will raise any objection. For now, there is still time to draw conclusions. Sonia Gandhi is yet to be presented with the proposal. A KPCC leader is reported to have said that the party leaders will decide and make a proposal.
