Madras High Court sentences IPS Officer to 15 days custody on contempt plea filed by MS Dhoni

The Madras High Court sentenced retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer G Sampath Kumar to 15 days imprisonment, on Friday against a contempt petition which was filed by the former Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The court had kept the sentence in abeyance for 30 days for enabling the officer to appeal against the verdict.

The complaint filed by Chennai Super Kings captain Dhoni was initially filed as a Rs 100 crore defamation suit against Sampath Kumar, who was serving with the CID department of the state of Tamil Nadu Police and an anonymous television channel during the year of 2014 for levelling the allegations of match-fixing against him in the betting case of Indian Premier League.

But the cricketer had later filed a contempt petition against the officer who retired in May, 2023, cited some downgrading remarks made by the IPS officer against the Supreme Court and the Madras High Court. Sampath Kumar had carried out the initial probe in 2013 IPL betting case but following that, he was suspended and was taken off the case as it came into notice that he had taken bribe from some people.
