The Supreme Court on Tuesday summoned yoga guru Ram Dev, the co-founder of Patanjali Ayurveda Institute, for publishing misleading advertisements against modern medical practices. After this, Patanjali apologized to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up Patanjali Ayurveda for not responding to notices on misleading advertisements. A day later, Patanjali apologized by submitting an affidavit.
A bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah directed Balakrishna and Ramdev to appear before the court on April 2.
In the affidavit submitted to the court, Balakrishna said that he has respect for law and order and apologized unconditionally. “I will ensure that such advertisements are not given in future,” he said.
Balakrishna said Patanjali’s only aim was to “encourage the citizens of this country to live a healthy life by consuming the products”. “We aim to advise people to live a healthy life by consuming Patanjali products made with the support of research on ancient Ayurveda,” he said.
Patanjali is an Ayurvedic multinational company founded in 2006 by Ramdev and Balakrishna. It manufactures products ranging from Ayurvedic medicine to cosmetics and food products. The company has been hit with a court order for misleading advertising about the efficacy of its products.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court came down heavily on Patanjali and directed Ramdev and Balakrishna to appear before the Supreme Court.
