New Recruitment Drive Fails to Curb Unemployment: IITs Report 30-35% Jobless Rate

Despite the technology industries in India initiating a fresh round of recruitment in January, a significant portion of students from the nation’s prestigious educational institutions, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), still find themselves unemployed, with estimates ranging between 30-35%.

Compared to the previous year, the pace of recruitment has notably slowed down. Many campuses are now allowing companies to register anew for talent acquisition.

In response to this challenge, certain IITs have intensified their efforts to attract companies to campus for hiring purposes. Additionally, some institutes have extended their second-phase placement drives until June or July.

Efforts are also underway to engage with companies that had initially registered for recruitment but did not participate in the campus interviews.

According to sources at IIT Bombay, “Recession is a global phenomenon, impacting IT industry recruitment worldwide. Over 100 students have now been placed in the second phase, which will continue until June.”

At the Powai campus, there is an expectation to recruit 33% of B.Tech, Master’s, and doctoral degree students, similar to the figures from the first phase of placements last year. Out of 2,400 registered candidates, 1,970 participated in tests and interviews, resulting in 1,300 securing jobs by the end of March.
