Junior Doctors’ Strike in West Bengal Continues Over Trainee Doctor’s Rape and Murder

Kolkata (PTI): The cease work by junior doctors at state-run hospitals across West Bengal continued on Wednesday, as they protested the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month. Health services remain paralyzed at most state-run medical facilities, with the strike now stretching into its fourth week.

“Our demand for justice is still unmet. We will continue protesting until our colleague receives justice and the culprits are held accountable,” said one of the junior doctors. The protesters are also demanding the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, accusing the police of inadequate action in the initial investigation of the August 9 incident before the case was handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.

The body of the on-duty postgraduate trainee was found in the seminar room of the hospital, sparking nationwide outrage. The junior doctors believe that crucial individuals are being shielded in the case and are calling for the full truth to be revealed.

A civic volunteer was arrested shortly after the body was discovered, and the CBI has since arrested the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial misconduct.
