BCI Expels 107 Fake Advocates in Delhi Amid Crackdown on Fraudulent Legal Practitioners

New Delhi: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has removed 107 fake advocates from Delhi’s Roll of Advocates, intensifying efforts to curb illegal law practice.

This action aligns with Rule 32 of the BCI Certificate and Place of Practice (Verification) Rules, 2015, recently bolstered by a 2023 amendment to simplify identifying unqualified practitioners.

Between 2019 and June 2023, the BCI conducted extensive investigations nationwide, leading to the removal of thousands of advocates for issues like forged certificates and non-compliance with verification standards.

Of the latest 107 expulsions, 50 occurred post-amendment, while others failed to meet updated verification criteria. Additionally, the BCI has directed State Bar Councils to thoroughly investigate any preemptive certificate surrender requests to ensure no further exploitation of the justice system.
