UP Politics: History Repeats Itself – SP and Congress’s On-Again, Off-Again Alliance

The Samajwadi Party (SP) supported Congress in the 1993 assembly elections against BJP. Now, Congress is reciprocating by backing SP in the upcoming UP by-elections.

In the 1993 assembly elections, SP sided with Congress against BJP. However, in Uttar Pradesh, SP declined to form an alliance with Congress or any other party, opting for a BSP partnership instead.

SP’s Kapil Dev Singh stated, “Our alliance will defeat BJP in Uttar Pradesh.” Thus, no alliance would be formed with any other party in the state.

SP’s Kapil Dev Singh accused VP Singh and Chandrashekhar of attempting to weaken SP’s national president, Mulayam Singh Yadav, in Uttar Pradesh, prioritizing his defeat over BJP’s.

The political implications of Congress’s decision to skip the by-elections are similar. The difference lies in Congress opting out this time. Initially, Congress sought five of the ten seats, but SP offered only Khair and Ghaziabad, and potentially Fulpur.

It’s speculated that Congress, dissatisfied with seat allocation, skipped the by-elections to deflect blame for the alliance’s potential breakdown.
