CBI Charges Former RG Kar Hospital Principal with Rape and Murder; Arrests Police Officer for Alleged Involvement

Kolkata (PTI): In a major turn of events, the CBI on Saturday filed rape and murder charges against Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who is already in judicial custody over corruption charges, according to an official from the investigating agency.

The CBI also arrested Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge of Tala Police Station, for his alleged role in the rape and murder of an on-duty female medic at RG Kar Hospital. The hospital falls under the jurisdiction of Tala Police Station.

The agency sought a court order for Ghosh’s remand, with the court directing jail authorities to produce him for CBI custody. So far, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.

The investigation began after the semi-nude body of a female postgraduate trainee was discovered on August 9 in the hospital’s seminar hall. Mondal, after being questioned multiple times by CBI officers at the CGO Complex, was arrested when his responses failed to satisfy investigators.

Both Ghosh and Mondal face charges of evidence tampering, with Mondal additionally accused of delaying the filing of the FIR. A civic volunteer was earlier arrested by Kolkata Police in connection with the crime, now under CBI investigation following a Calcutta High Court order.

Ghosh had previously been arrested on September 2 for financial irregularities at the hospital.
