Digvijaya Singh Highlights Bail Inequities for Muslims, Calls for Release of Umar Khalid and Others

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh raised concerns over the selective application of bail for Muslims while joining families of jailed activists, including former JNU scholar Umar Khalid, to demand their release. This discussion followed a Supreme Court remark that “bail is a rule and jail is an exception.”

At a panel by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), Singh criticized the RSS, likening its targeting of Muslims to the persecution of Jews under Hitler. He questioned why bail remains elusive for Muslims and highlighted the oppressive use of laws like the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against dissenters.

Echoing similar sentiments, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya asserted that the jailed activists would eventually be seen as “warriors of democracy.” Families of the detained voiced their distress over ongoing injustices, with public figures like Swara Bhasker and Kunal Kamra expressing solidarity with the cause.
