India still the fastest growing economy: Nirmala Sitharaman on price rise

After protests and disruptions, the discussion on price rise was finally held in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Responding to the price rise debate, the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman stated in the Lok Sabha that the country’s economy is better than most countries across the world, and India is the fastest growing economy. She said, “Global agencies have ranked India’s economy high.”

She said that despite the Pandemic India held its inflation below 7% and that it should be recognized.
She said, “Pandemic, second wave, Omicron, Russia-Ukraine (war), even today largest supply components in China are under lockdown…in spite of that, we have held inflation well within 7% or below. That has to be recognised.”

ANI quoted the minister as saying, “We’ve never seen a pandemic of this kind…all of us were trying to make sure that people in our constituencies are given extra help. I recognise that everybody -MPs & State Govts- has played their role.”

She credited the people of India for standing against adversities and now India is recognized as the fastest growing economy.

Mentioning the government’s collection of GST for the month of July, the Finance Minister said that ₹1.49 Lakh crore were collected, the second highest level ever since the introduction of GST. She said that this is the fifth consecutive month that collections have been above ₹1.4 Lakh crore.

The opposition MPs interrupted Sitharaman and questioned her assertions on the economy. As she was responding in the Lok Sabha, the Congress MPs staged a walkout of the house. She said, “Congress MPs are walking out, their hypocrisy has been exposed.”
