Excise Case: Supreme Court to Hear Kejriwal’s Plea Against High Court’s Decision Upholding His Arrest

On Monday, the Supreme Court is set to hear Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s appeal against a recent High Court ruling upholding his arrest in a money-laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam.

The cause list on the apex court’s website indicates that a bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta will review Kejriwal’s petition challenging the Delhi High Court’s decision issued on April 9.

The High Court’s affirmation of Kejriwal’s arrest in the money-laundering probe dealt a significant blow to the chief minister.

It noted that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had few options left after Kejriwal repeatedly ignored summonses and declined to participate in the investigation.

Dismissing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader’s plea contesting his arrest and subsequent remand by the ED, the High Court upheld the federal agency’s actions.

The case revolves around alleged corruption and money laundering associated with the development and implementation of the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which was later annulled.

Kejriwal was apprehended by the ED on March 21, shortly after the High Court denied him protection from coercive measures by the anti-money laundering agency. He remains in judicial custody until April 15 and is presently detained at Tihar Jail.
