Former RG Kar Medical College Principal Sandeep Ghosh Arrested by CBI for Alleged Kickbacks and Financial Irregularities

Kolkata: Former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly receiving kickbacks during his tenure at the government hospital. Ghosh had been under CBI questioning for two weeks regarding financial irregularities, following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor last month. He was arrested on September 2.

Ghosh moved the Supreme Court, challenging a Kolkata High Court order that dismissed his plea to be included as a party in a petition concerning financial misconduct at the hospital. According to CBI sources, Ghosh allegedly took a 40% commission for facilitating illegal transfers, postings, and awarding pass marks to unqualified medical students.

The investigation has also revealed that the illegal transfer and posting racket has expanded, with commissions now ranging between 10-30%. North Bengal Medical College’s Dr. Abhik Ghosh has also been identified as a key figure in the scheme. In addition, to transfer commissions, Ghosh is accused of taking 20-30% on tenders awarded to vendors, including Biplav Singha and Suman Hazra, who were reportedly involved in medical scams.

The CBI is continuing its search for other senior doctors involved in the racket.
