Mob of 1,500 people attack RG Kar hospital, police did nothing: Eyewitnesses

Amid widespread protests across West Bengal over the rape and murder of a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, a massive mob targeted the hospital during a demonstration yesterday. Eyewitnesses reported that the mob, taking advantage of the chaos, stormed the emergency ward and vandalized property, including chairs. The situation escalated as some individuals also vandalized the protest site.

While the nation was busy protesting on the streets, the mob took advantage of the situation and pushed their way in the emergency ward of the RG Kar Hospital and vandalising chairs. Some of the people were even seen vandalising the protest site. The CBI has taken over the investigation of the Kolkata rape and murder case. While opposition parties alleged that the goons were from the BJP, the BJP countered their part saying that the TMC had sent the goons to the hospital. “The mob destroyed the whole Emergency department. Then, they entered the Trauma and Gyne buildings and threatened the nurses and also doctors. The Police did nothing practically,” Dr Mridul Sarkar, a former R.G Kar student who was at the hospital last night, told ANI. According to the eyewitnesses, police stood there watching the mob vandalising several property.

Not an act of a single individual
While Congress general secretary Deepa Dasmunshi responded to the rape case and questioned that what will the CBI do after all evidence is erased. “ This is a very shocking thing. 150 grams of semen – it is not a case of 1-2 men, it is obvious that it is a gang rape…..Mamata ji says that CBI investigation will happen later. What will CBI do by going there after all the evidence gets erased?” the secretary told ANI.
