Mulayam Singh Yadav passes away, PM Modi pays tribute

After weeks in the hospital, Mulayam Singh Yadav, the founder of the Samajwadi Party and three-time chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, passed away this morning. He was 82, reported NDTV.

The Samajwadi Party quoted Mulayam Singh’s son Akhilesh Yadav as saying: “My respected father and everyone’s Neta-ji has died.”

At Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital, Mulayam Singh had been in serious condition for days and was receiving life-saving medication. In six weeks, he was going to turn 83.

In a series of tweets PM Modi paid tribute to Mulayam Singh Yadav, “Mulayam Singh Yadav’s death pains me; he was a remarkable personality and was widely admired as a humble and grounded leader.”

Yogi Aditanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, declared a three-day state of mourning and expressed his sincere sadness.

Mulayam Singh, who was born on November 22nd, 1939, initially served as an MLA in 1967. When Mulayam Singh was serving his second term as an MLA, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency, sending him to prison among other opposition leaders. Mulayam Singh, a prominent politician in Uttar Pradesh, served as the nation’s defence minister from 1996 to 1998.

Mulayam Singh was elected MLA ten times and Lok Sabha MP seven times. He was even considered a potential contender for prime minister for a spell. Mulayam Singh, a former wrestler, was renowned as a shrewd politician who didn’t hesitate when it came to making agreements, even with bitter rivals. He occasionally teamed up with Mayawati’s BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party), the BJP, or the Congress to gain power of Uttar Pradesh.

In his final days, Mulayam Singh received several visits from leaders. Even though he had stepped aside from active politics for a while, his son Akhilesh has been in charge of the party since 2017, and he is still regarded as one of the nation’s most important opposition forces. He continued to be referred to as “Neta-ji” by his son and the Samajwadi Party.
