New Delhi: In a significant move ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, renowned wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have joined the Congress party. The Olympians, who played a key role in the protests against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Singh, met with senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge before officially joining.
Phogat, who recently resigned from her position at Northern Railways, expressed her gratitude to the Congress for their support during challenging times. She also pledged her dedication to working for justice, particularly for women facing injustice.
Their entry into Congress is viewed as a strategic advantage, especially with the farming community in Haryana. Additionally, it strengthens Congress’ position in seat-sharing talks with AAP as the state prepares for the elections.
