Rahul Gandhi bows down to Gandhi statue in Parliament; India alliance welcomes him to Parliament

New Delhi: Within minutes of restoration of Lok Sabha membership, Rahul Gandhi reached Parliament. MPs reached the Parliament gate to receive Rahul who arrived around 11.45 AM. Rahul went straight to the statue of Gandhi. Gandhi entered the Parliament after bowing to the statue.

A few minutes after Rahul’s arrival, the assembly broke up due to protests. After 134 days after the case and disqualification, Rahul will reach the Parliament. This morning, the Lok Sabha Secretariat announced the restoration of Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership.

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Surat court’s sentence against Rahul in the defamation case. In April 2019, the case was against the remark ‘Why do all thieves have the name Modi?’ in an election campaign meeting in Karnataka.

Gujarat BJP MLA Purnesh Modi filed a complaint against Rahul. On March 23, the Surat Magistrate Court sentenced Rahul to two years in prison and a fine. The Gujarat High Court also rejected the request to stay the sentence. With this, Rahul approached the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court stayed the sentence on the ground that no reason was given for imposing the maximum sentence.

After getting the stay, the Congress tried to meet the Speaker to restore Rahul’s membership in the Lok Sabha, but could not. The Congress accused the Speaker of being evasive. With this, a letter was sent to the Lok Sabha Secretariat requesting this.

It was alleged that the documents to remove Rahul’s disqualification were not received directly and the letter was not ready to be sealed when it was sent by post. The Congress was preparing to protest inside and outside the House if the restoration of the post of MP was delayed. In the meantime, this morning the Lok Sabha membership was restored.
