Supreme Court Closes Contempt Case Against Baba Ramdev, Patanjali, and Acharya Balkrishna After Accepting Apology

The Supreme Court today concluded the contempt proceedings against Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ltd and its Managing Director, Acharya Balkrishna, following their apology over misleading medical advertisements that breached a court undertaking.

The court, led by Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah, discharged the notices issued to the contemnors but cautioned that Patanjali must adhere to all future court orders and avoid repeating previous misconduct. Justice Kohli delivered the judgment today, noting that the proceedings were closed in light of the parties’ apology and the corrective measures they have taken to address the contempt.

The case originated from a petition filed by the Indian Medical Association, which challenged Patanjali’s advertisements for disparaging allopathy and making unsubstantiated claims about curing certain diseases. Following the Supreme Court’s reprimand, Patanjali committed in November 2023 to cease such advertisements.
