Uttarakhand nurse raped and murdered while returning from duty; body recovered after 9 days

A nurse was allegedly raped and killed while she was returning from a private hospital in Uttarakhand to her home near the Uttar Pradesh border. The incident comes days after Kolkata trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered in the medical college premises.

According to the police, the victim had left the hospital on the evening of July 30 and was seen taking an e-rickshaw from Indra Chowk in Rudrapur in CCTV footage but she did not reach her house on Kashipur Road in Uttar Pradesh’s Bilaspur. It was a rented accommodation where the victim used to stay with her 11-year-old daughter. The following day a missing complaint was filed by the victim’s sister and police began its search.

The Uttar Pradesh police only recovered her body August 8, (9 days after the crime occurred) in an empty plot which was nearly 1.5 km away from her house in Dibdiba village. The police sent the body for post-mortem. The Uttar Pradesh police traced the stolen mobile phone of the victim which led them to the accused, Dharmendra. The accused was a daily wage labourer from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly. He was arrested from Rajasthan on Wednesday.

It was reported that the accused, Dharmendra, who was drunk, saw the victim, followed her and attacked her when she was about to enter her apartment building, police said. “He dragged her to the nearby bushes. Raped and strangled her using her scarf,” said Manjunath TC, Senior Superintendent of Police, Udham Singh Nagar. The accused also stole her phone and ₹ 3,000 from her purse, the police officer added.
Amidst recovering the body on August 8, the came into light after 7 days. The incident comes into light amid a nationwide protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The 31-year-old’s semi-naked body was recovered in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital last week.
