Uttarakhand tunnel collapse: Rescuers wait for the arrival of new drilling machine

Dozens of labourers who are trapped in the Uttarakhand tunnel collapse for close than 150 hours are eagerly waiting to be saved by the rescuers with the help of a giant drill which is being deployed to save them. Meanwhile, the rescue operations came to a halt yesterday evening when the rescuers heard a sudden “cracking sound” and the drilling machine had developed a snag.

The officials told that a second heavy drill is being airlifted to the accident site and it is on its way and the operations are expected to resume by 10 am. There are 40 workers who have been stuck since Sunday morning after a portion of the tunnel caved in. Officials stated that all workers are safe and are being supplied food, oxygen and water through the steel pipes that have been drilled into the opening.

The family members of the trapped workers have also reached the site and are losing their hope while anxiously waiting for their return. The brother of the one of the trapped labourer said that they should be rescued as soon as possible with maximum efforts put by the rescuers before anyone’s health deteriorates. The doctors have also told for the comprehensive rehabilitation for the trapped labourers and stated hat prolonged process could lead to both mental and physical exhaustion of the workers. Meanwhile, the Air Force has also flown a second machine from Indore on a C-130 Hercules military plane and the following operations are to be expected to resume soon.
