An elderly man, Abubakar (71), fell victim to a card-swapping scam at the Gerukatte Canara Bank ATM in Belthangady on October 2. The incident occurred when two unidentified individuals entered the ATM kiosk while Abubakar was withdrawing cash. Despite his refusal of their assistance, the strangers persisted.
Two days later, Abubakar discovered that his ATM card was malfunctioning. Upon contacting the bank, he learned that ₹49,200 had been withdrawn from his account using the card. It is believed that the stranger had swapped his card with an old one during their interaction at the ATM.
A complaint has been filed with the Belthangady police station, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend the culprits.
