Was sent to Tihar jail for not supporting or going with BJP: DK Shivakumar

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar on Monday claimed he was sent to Tihar jail for refusing to join or support the BJP, PTI reported.

Responding to a statement by senior BJP leader KS Eshwarappa, questioning as to why he went to Tihar jail, Shivakumar said, “I went to Tihar jail because they (BJP) sent me. You (BJP) sent me, as I did not support you, didn’t come along with you.”

Asked whether he wouldn’t have gone to jail if he had joined the saffron party, the KPCC President said, “everything is known, there are records…”

On 3 September 2019, Shivakumar was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case, and was lodged in Tihar jail. However, he was released on 23 October the same year after the Delhi High Court granted him bail.

Shivakumar, demanding a fair probe into kickback charges levelled by the State contractors association, has further called the Karnataka BJP government as the most corrupt in this country.

Karnataka State Contractors Association, in their letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July this year claimed harassment by ministers, elected representatives, and several others by accusing them of demanding up to 30 percent of the tender amount for approving a contract, and 5-6 percent towards the release of ‘Letter of Credit’ against pending bills.

While Congress is demanding a judicial probe by a sitting Supreme Court Judge, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has ordered an inquiry by officials into the charges of corruption.
