Javed Akhtar defamation case: Actor Kangana Ranaut appears before Mumbai Magistrate court

After the Mumbai Court’s order last week to issue a warrant against Kangana Ranaut if she fails to appear on 20 September, the bollywood actor appeared before a court on Monday in connection with a criminal defamation complaint registered against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar.

On Monday, Ranaut appeared before the metropolitan court for the first time since summons was issued to her 8 months ago.

She filed a counter-complaint against Javed Akhtar, alleging extortion and invasion of privacy. Ranuat also accused that Mr. Akhtar threated her and said she did not trust the judge at the Magistrate’s court in Andheri.

Her complaint was in response to a defamation suit by Mr. Akhtar, who had alleged that she dragged his name into a TV interview with Arnab Goswami in 2020 on the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Mr. Akhtar and Ranuat accompanied by her CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) security entourage.came face-to-face at the Magistrate court on Monday.

Earlier this month, the high Court had dismissed Kangana’s plea, seeking quashing of proceedings initiated against her on the criminal defamation complaint filed by Mr. Akhtar.

Justice Revati Mohite-Dere of Bombay high court, said in the order that there was no procedural illegality or irregularity in the metropolitan courts order initiating the proceedings.

Last year November, 76-year-old Akhtar had filed the complaint against Ranaut claiming she made defamatory statements against him in a TV discussion, which allegedly damaged his reputation.
