Shaheen Bagh faces bulldozer threat as MCD, plea filed in SC

The Delhi Police are going to provide security to the South Delhi Municipal Corporation for the demolition drive in the Shaheen Bagh area on Monday morning, where the notable protest against Anti-CAA took place for months.

DCP (south-east) Esha Pandey said they will provide security to the civic body for the demolition drive in the Shaheen Bagh area.

While the Delhi Police had earlier said they would not be able to assist the SDMC with the anti-encroachment drive because of insufficient staff, after the SDMC approached the senior police officials at Delhi Police headquarters, the south-east district police decided to send an adequate force to help with the drive.

The anti-demolition drive in the Kalindi Kunj-Jamia Nagar area on May 5, near Shaheen Bagh, was postponed after the Delhi Police informed them that there was the unavailability of an adequate police force, the Indian Express reported.

The supreme court is likely to hear petitions filed by the CPM against the demolition drive in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri and Shaheen Bagh.

In the plea, the CPM’s lawyer sought an urgent hearing. The Chief Justice of India has asked the lawyer to mention the plea before the bench that is hearing the matter.

Amanathullah Khan, MLA of Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) said there are no illegal encroachment in the Shaheen Bagh area and that he himself had removed all illegal structures. He alleged that MCD and the BJP are playing politics.
