The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday fielded Abhijit Das’s name against the national general secretary Trinamool Congress and MP Abhishek Banerjee from Diamond Harbour in South 24 for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Abhishek Banerjee is the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Abhishek is once again contesting from this constituency. The TMC leader made his entry in the Lok Sabha in 2014 and is a two time-MP from the seat. While Das who is also known as Bobby, had contested from Diamond Harbour in 2009 also on a BJP ticket.
The affidavit of 2014 election of Das mentioned that he was a legal advisor and a social activist. BJP sources close to Das said that he is known for his organisational prowess and that he also has a strong hold in the party’s unions in the district.
While it should also be noted that the BJP had primarily released the names of 41 candidates in West Bengal, it took time for the party to decide and announce the fielded name from Diamond Harbour. The BJP party had announced its first list on March 2.
