Sheikh Hasina to Return to Bangladesh Once Election Date is Set, Says Son

Dhaka: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return to her country once the newly formed caretaker government announces a date for elections, according to her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Hasina fled to India on Monday following weeks of violent protests that led to her resignation.

A caretaker government, led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in on Thursday with the task of overseeing the upcoming elections. In an interview with the Times of India, Joy, who is currently based in the US, stated, “For now, she (Hasina) is in India. She will return to Bangladesh as soon as the interim government sets a date for the election.”

The Awami League, Hasina’s party, is not part of the interim government. Her resignation followed a student-led uprising and widespread violence that resulted in around 300 deaths and thousands of injuries.

Hasina is currently staying in a safe house in the New Delhi area. Indian media reports suggest she may seek asylum in Britain, though the British Home Office has not commented on this possibility.

India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed on Thursday that he had discussions with his British counterpart regarding the situation in Bangladesh but did not disclose further details.

Joy also hinted at the possibility of entering politics if necessary, adding, “I am confident the Awami League will participate in the election, and we might even win.”
