We are not behind the attacks by Hamas rebels on Israel: Iran

Tehran: Iran has said that the accusation that it was behind the attack by Hamas rebels on Israel is baseless.

Allegations of Iran’s role behind the attack are based on political reasons. “The Islamic Republic of Iran does not interfere in the decisions of other countries, including Palestine”, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasir Kanani told reporters.

Kanani said the Palestinian people have the necessary capacity and will to defend their nation and reclaim their rights without any help from Tehran.

In a statement released overnight, Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations denied allegations that Iran was behind the Hamas attack.

The development comes after the Wall Street Journal reported that ‘Iranian security forces officials helped Hamas plan a surprise attack on Israel and gave the go-ahead for the attack at a meeting in Beirut last Monday’.

President Ibrahim Raisi, who spoke to leaders of Hamas and the Gaza-based Islamic Jihad group after the Hamas attack on Israel and gave the go-ahead for the attack, urged countries with Muslim governments to support Palestine.

A US official said he could not say whether Iran was directly involved in the Hamas attack. However, there is no doubt that other countries, including Iran, have provided financial and arms support to Hamas.
