ICC’s New Gender Regulation: No Place for Transgender Players in International Women’s Cricket

International Cricket Council (ICC) has revised the gender regulations and banned the participation of transgender players to participate in Women’s cricket. ICC Board Meeting on Tuesday in Ahmedabad has approved the decision that, any player who has transitioned to female from male and has been through any form of male puberty will no longer participate in women’s cricket.

The statement from the ICC Board suggests”It is based on the following principles (in order of priority), protection of the integrity of the women’s game, safety, fairness and inclusion,” However, the Board has also stated that, these regulations would be revised after two years.

ICC CEO Geoff Allardice has said, “Inclusivity is incredibly important to us as a sport, but our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women’s game and the safety of players.”

Previously, there was no regulation regarding restriction of participation of transgender players in women’s cricket. In September 2023, Danielle Mcgahey became the first trans- woman to participate in women’s cricket. The 29 years old represented Canada in six T20 internationals where she scored 118 runs at an average of 19.66 and a strike rate of 95.93 with a highest score of 48 against Brazil.
