Three men have been apprehended for assaulting a shopkeeper in Bengaluru after a dispute over playing loud music

On Monday, three men were arrested for allegedly assaulting a shopkeeper over playing loud music during the ‘Azaan’ (Islamic call to prayer) in Bengaluru, as reported by the police.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 25 years, were apprehended in connection with the incident. Initial reports suggested that the assault occurred due to the playing of ‘Hanuman Chalisa,’ but upon investigation, authorities found no substantial evidence to support this claim, as the complaint solely cited the issue of loud music.

The altercation took place on Sunday evening at Siddannagalli in the Cubbonpet area, under the jurisdiction of the Halasuru Gate police station. CCTV footage circulating online depicts a group of youths confronting the shopkeeper over the loud music, leading to a heated exchange. One of the individuals grabbed the shopkeeper’s collar, escalating the situation, and ultimately resulting in the assault.

According to police statements, the shopkeeper played music at a high volume during the Azaan, which reportedly offended members of the minority community. Upon questioning, a verbal altercation ensued, culminating in physical violence initiated by one of the youths.

A senior police officer confirmed that based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered at the Halasuru police station, and three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal intimidation, intentional insult to provoke breach of peace, unlawful assembly, and attempted murder, have been filed against the accused.
