UK elections: 28 MPs with Indian roots in new UK house; 12 of them Sikhs

A record number of 28 Indian-Origin members of Parliament are elected to the House of Commons in the general elections of the UK after the announcement of the results on Friday.

Out of the 28 MPs, 12 among them are from the Sikh community that includes six women candidates, who were elected to the House of Commons. According to the reports, all Sikh MPs belong to the Labour Party. Among the selected MPs, nine among them are first-timers, two individuals are elected for the third straight time, and one has made it to the House of Commons for the second time. Kirith Entwistle, also known as Kirith Ahluwalia is the first woman, who is elected as an MP from Bolton North East. Joining the queue, Sonia Kumar also became the first woman MP from the Dudley parliamentary seat. In a similar manner, Harpreet Kaur Uppal also won the Huddersfield parliamentary seat to enter the Parliament for the first time.

With its 12 Sikh MPs, UK comes second to Canada, which is a home to a sizeable Punjabi diaspora. It should be noted that Canada has 18 Sikh MPs.
