Kamal Haasan Calls ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal ‘Dangerous’

Chennai (PTI): The “One Nation, One Election” proposal is both dangerous and flawed, warned actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan on Saturday, adding that its consequences have left lasting scars in some countries. He argued that this approach is neither necessary for India now nor in the future.

Without naming any specific party or leader, Kamal Haasan suggested that if simultaneous elections had taken place in 2014 or 2015, it could have led to a complete sweep, resulting in dictatorship, suppression of free speech, and dominance by a single leader.

“We narrowly escaped a situation more dangerous than Coronavirus,” Kamal Haasan said during a party meeting, indicating that previous elections were held without adopting the simultaneous polls model.

Drawing comparisons with Europe and Russia, though without naming any specific country, he questioned the wisdom of synchronizing all elections. “What would happen if all traffic lights turned the same color at once?” he asked, emphasizing that voters should have time to think and make informed choices.
