Kolkata: Junior doctors in West Bengal have resumed their indefinite strike after failing to secure adequate safety and security measures from the state government.
The doctors began boycotting work on Tuesday, October 1, to pressure authorities to address their demands, which include the implementation of stricter measures to prevent similar incidents of violence against healthcare professionals.
The strike follows a 42-day protest sparked by the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata last August. While the doctors partially returned to their duties on September 21, they expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s response to their demands.
“We have not seen any positive steps from the government to fulfill our demands for safety and security,” said Aniket Mahato, a junior doctor. “Today marks the 52nd day of our protest, and our lives are still not secure. The government has failed to keep its promises.”
Mahato emphasized that the doctors have no choice but to resume their strike indefinitely unless the government provides clear assurances regarding the implementation of their demands.
