The Karnataka high court on Wednesday, clarifying it’s interim order said that ban on “religious dresses” is for both degree colleges and pre-university (PU) colleges where uniform has been prescribed, applies only to students and not to teachers.
Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi told advocate said, “We are making it very clear that whether a degree college or a PU College, if a uniform has been prescribed, that has to be followed so long as the matter is pending before the court.”
The High Court’s clarification comes amid chaos whether it’s order is also applicable to teachers. The court said it’s interim order was confined to students only, when a lawyer appearing on behalf of petitioners from Udupi pointed out that the teachers were also asked to remove their headscarf.
Recently, a lecturer in a private college in Tumkuru district had resigned after she was asked to stop wearing hijab while teaching.
Mohammed Tahir, counsel for one of the petitioners urged the High Court bench for clarity on its interim order saying that “every institution was pushing students outside the college citing the court order.”
A full bench led Chief Justice Awasthi, Justice J.M. Khazi and Justice Krishna S. Dixit is currently hearing the hijab case and wants to finish the hearing within this week.
