After campaigns against issues Hijab, Halal meat, ban on Muslim vendors near the temple, use of loudspeakers in mosques, statue artists, now there have been demands to change names of roads after Muslims and Christians.
On Tuesday, Bhartiya Janata Party (BBMP) Corporator and senior leader NR Ramesh has submitted a representation to BBMP Commissioner Gaurav Gupta to change the names of nearly 300 roads in Bengaluru, seeking to rename the roads after eminent personalities who have contributed to the growth of India and Karnataka.
Ramesh told reporters, “People name some streets after their faith like Bismillah Nagar and I am not against it. But why should some roads be named after Tipu sultan and Britishers who treated us like slaves? For example, Victoria Hospital and Victoria Road are named after the British queen, similarly, Albert street, Millers Road, Richmond Town, Frazer Town, Benson Town and others are named after Britishers.”
He said these names indicate the slavery of Indians at the hands of the British and so he has appealed to the BBMP to change them at the earliest.
Mohan Gowda, spokesperson of the fringe right-wing outfit Hindu Jana Jagruti (HJS) has said that their organization supports the demand of BJP corporators to rename roads after Muslims and Christians.
According to reports, the listed roads for a name change include Mosque Road in Frazer Town, Enayathulla Mekhri Circle, Ali Asker Road, Cox Town, and several others.
