‘Concerned about the ongoing violence in Tripura against Muslims, Indian govt must stop violence against religious communities,’ USCIRF

US Commission on International Religious Freedom is concerned about the ongoing violence in Tripura against Muslims, which some regard as retaliation for attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh last month.

In a tweet, the USCIRF chairperson Nadine Maenza has said, “USCIRF is concerned about the ongoing violence in Tripura against Muslims, which some regard as retaliation for attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh last month. The Indian government must stop violence against religious communities,” she said, sharing a news report by the BBC.

In the last four days, over 10 incidents of religious violence have been reported from the North Tripura district, BBC reported.

Authorities have enforced restrictions on large gatherings after Tuesday night’s violence in the Panisagar town in which a mosque was vandalized along with several shops belonging to Muslims.

The attacks followed a rally taken out by the hardline Hindutva outfit, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) – a close ally of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party.

USCIRF Commissioner Anurima Bhargava has shown concern about the ongoing Anti-Muslim violence in the state.

“USCIRF is particularly alarmed about reports from Tripura of mobs desecrating mosques & torching properties of Muslims. The Indian gov’t must bring those responsible for instigating & engaging in religious violence to justice & must prevent further attacks,” she tweeted.
