AMU Makes History: First Woman Vice Chancellor Appointed in 100 Years

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has appointed Prof. Naima Khatoon as its first woman Vice Chancellor in its century-long history. This momentous decision marks a significant milestone for the renowned institution.

Prof. Naima Khatoon, currently serving as the Principal of AMU Women’s College, has been selected for this prestigious role. Notably, she is the wife of the current Vice Chancellor, Mohammad Gulrez, adding a unique dimension to this appointment.

The appointment of Prof. Naima Khatoon was officially confirmed by the Ministry of Education following approval from President Draupadi Murmu. She will assume the position for a five-year term, bringing her extensive experience and academic expertise to the forefront of university leadership.

Having earned her PhD in Psychology from AMU, Prof. Naima Khatoon has a long-standing association with the institution. She began her journey as a lecturer in the Psychology department in 1988, eventually rising to the rank of Professor in 2006. In 2014, she took on the role of Principal at the Women’s College, demonstrating her commitment to advancing education and empowering women.

The announcement of Prof. Naima Khatoon’s appointment marks a significant departure from tradition at AMU, which was established as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875 and later renamed in 1920.
