AMU student Amit Kumar tops Indian Statistical Service exam

Amit Kumar, a research scholar from the Department of Statistics and Operations Research in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has not only topped the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) exam of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), but he also completed the selection procedure for a position in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Grade B-DSIM with the second rank. 

The ISS topper told AMU’s public relations office that the biggest challenge for any UPSC aspirant is to keep the momentum of the preparation on the right track till the goal is achieved and the key to a successful journey requires that you strive despite incredible odd.

When the pandemic brought life to a standstill, Amit indulged smartly into an in-depth study of various statistical methods, data processing, national and international official statistical systems, sector-wise statistics and national accounts, linear estimations, statistical information and case studies and working of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), as per reports.

“I divided time wisely to prepare for the two descriptive and two objective papers of Statistics and the General English and General Studies papers. I prepared adequately to understand the key concepts, highlighted all important points in my notes, solved numerous sample papers and never missed any updates on my subject”, he said.

“I decided to work hard and channelise my energy in the right direction. I didn’t look back and the desired results have come now,” Amit added.

Pointinh out that he had studied thoroughly in his graduation, post-graduation and research courses, Amit said it all came handy during the ISS preparations. “But, the direction to crack the exam would not have been possible without the guidance of teachers at the Department of Statistics and Operations Research in AMU”.

He appeared in six different subjects of UPSC ISS examination held from July 16 to 18, this year followed by Personality Test interview in November’s last week.

Professor Aquil Ahmed (Chairman, Department of Statistics and Operations Research), extended congratulations to Amit on his well-deserved success and said that it is heartening to see that Amit managed to top the ISS exam at a time, when academic activities across the country were put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to reports.

“Amit is an inspiration to AMU students and the University community. His success is also a testimony of the guidance provided by the faculty members”, Ahmed added.
