India Election Results 2024 Live Updates: NDA set to form government for first time as coalition government

Narendra Modi is all set to form his government for the record consecutive term in India, this time under another name that is the NDA government. However, this time, scenario is a bit different as the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party suffered a major setback as it fell short of a majority – with 240 seats .

The saffron party had to rely heavily on its alliance partners such as the TDP and JD(U) to secure a majority of 272 seats required to form the government. While on the other hand, the opposition INDIA bloc combined by the Congress, the Samajwadi Party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Trinamool Congress on a total of 232 seats. The Congress secured a whole of 99 seats while the Samajwadi Party gave a stunning performance by winning 37 seats. It comes as a great contrast as the party had won a mere of 5 seats in Uttar Pradesh during the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

Shedding light in West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress Party won a total of 29 seats in the state. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP won 7 seats and the Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray secured 9 seats.

A SETBACK FOR BJP

Even though, the saffron party managed a win for a consecutive third time in the Lok Sabha elections, the party had fallen in front of its own word when it kept on claiming during pre-election rallies – “Ab ki baar 400 paar.” The BJP indeed hit U-turns from the East to the West, biggest shock in the heartland state – Uttar Pradesh. The saffron’s party vote share also declined from 37.7 per cent to 36.56 per cent. Even though, the exit polls had predicted the BJP would make its big gains in south, it failed to secure even one seat in Tamil Nadu. However, on the other hand the BJP has opened its account for the very first time in Kerala and also doubled its seat from 4 to 8 in Telangana.

8:30 PM- Lok Sabha election 2024 results had in store many setbacks and surprises for the major political parties. While the NDA-led BJP has the majority with 272 MP seats but they fell short of their goal of 400 through a huge margin with a major upset in UP, the INDIA bloc with Congress’s 100, against all exit polls got a 252 and fell short of a majority and hinted at accommodating new hands to join them. According to sources PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu whose party won the Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and 16 MP seats. Will the Congress woo Naidu whose loyalties lie with the NDA? Will Bihar CM Nitish Kumar also play a part in whose government is to be formed?
