News18 fined for linking Hijab with Al Qaeda

The News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority fined television network News18 India Rs 50,000 for its coverage of the Karnataka hijab ban case.

A group of Muslim students at the Government Women’s Pre-University College in the city of Udupi, Karnataka, were denied access to courses in December as a result of wearing the hijab.

A man named Indrajeet Ghorpade complained on April 10 and the News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority ruled in his favour. The aforementioned programme aired on April 6.

Aman Chopra, a News18 India anchor, is accused of calling Muslim students “hijabi gang” and “hijabwali gazwa gang” and making “false charges that they had turned to rioting,” according to Ghorpade.

The news regulator ordered the channel to remove the show from its website and all of its platforms within seven days after receiving a response from News18 India regarding the complaint in September.

The order stated that the News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority was unable to justify the use of graphics that read “#AlQaedaGangExposed,” “Hijab ka fata poster, nikla Al Qaeda,”
