Oxfam India’s Truth Sparks IT Raid: Disparities in Tax Burden Revealed

NEW DELHI: In a startling turn of events, Oxfam India’s recent statements about tax disparities have prompted a raid by the Indian Income Tax Department on their office. The NGO highlighted significant inequalities in tax contributions, revealing that:

  • The bottom 50% of the population pays six times more indirect taxes as a percentage of income compared to the top 10%.
  • Of the total GST collected, nearly two-thirds come from the bottom 50%, about one-third from the middle 40%, and only 3-4% from the top 10%.

These findings have reignited discussions on the fairness of India’s tax system and the economic burdens faced by different income groups. The IT Department’s raid has raised concerns about the treatment of organizations that bring such issues to light.
