Six miscreants arrested who forced a woman to remove her Hijab

Vellore: Six men were arrested in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore for forcing a woman to remove her hijab earlier this week while visiting the historic Vellore Fort, a senior police official said on Thursday.

A 17-year-old juvenile delinquent was included in the gang that forced the woman to remove her hijab and was sent to a government shelter. Police arrested the rest. All of them were mostly auto rickshaw drivers and they targeted three women who were not wearing a hijab who was visiting the fort, the official said.

Vellore Superintendent of Police S. Rajesh Kannan, who declined to divulge further details, said the motive behind the March 27 crime was being investigated. He said that the public has been requested not to share the videos posted on social media.

In the video, the assailants ask the woman’s friend if it is fair to take the woman out wearing a hijab. More police have been deployed at the historic 16th-century fort following the incident. The police assistance booth will be made permanent. Kannan told reporters that the phone numbers of police officers will be prominently displayed at the booth for the convenience of the public.
