Assam Assembly Ends Special Break for Friday Prayers, Sparking Controversy

Guwahati: In a significant move, the Assam Legislative Assembly has canceled the long-standing tradition of granting Muslim MLAs a special break for Juma Namaz (Friday prayers). This practice, dating back to the British era, allowed Muslim legislators a break from 12 noon to 2 pm on Fridays.

BJP MLA Bishwajit Phukan announced the decision, stating, “The rule is being changed. There will be no more special breaks for Friday prayers.” The move was reportedly agreed upon in a meeting called by the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, with BJP MLAs expressing unanimous support.

The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, justified the decision by pointing out that no such adjournments are given in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, or other state assemblies. The move has sparked controversy, as it marks the end of a practice that has been in place for decades.
