Hijab row: Kuwaiti women protest outside Indian Embassy against the humiliation of hijab-clad students

The women’s wing of the Islamic Constitutional Movement on Wednesday staged a protest outside Indian Embassy in solidarity with the Muslim women in Karnataka over the hijab row.

Nearly 120 people participated in the protests, carrying placards against the hijab row which is intensifying every day in Karnataka.

New Zealand Boxer Sonny Bill Williams on Thursday had also posted a video on Twitter, expressing solidarity with Muslim women.

Last week, the Ambassador for International Religious Freedom (IRF), a US government body that monitors religious freedom throughout the world had condemned Karnataka over the row.

The US ambassador at large for IRF Rashad Hussain had tweeted, “Religious freedom includes the ability to choose one’s religious attire. The Indian state of Karnataka should not determine the permissibility of religious clothing. Hijab bans in schools violate religious freedom and stigmatize and marginalize women and girls.”

Several female Muslim students in Karnataka have been facing humiliation for wearing hijab at schools and colleges. They are even forced to take off their hijab before entering educational institutions.

Last week, the High Court has issued an interim order restraining students from wearing any form of religious dress in schools and colleges that have prescribed uniforms.
