Qatar alcohol ban at stadiums creates safe environment for women

Numerous women claimed that the ban on alcohol sales around football stadiums in Qatar had reduced the tense environment that surrounds the game.

Ellie Molloson, the campaign manager for HerGameToo, revealed to The Times that she had some qualms about going to Qatar initially. But her observations in Qatar ‘shocked’ her as she faced “no catcalls or wolf whistles or sexism of any kind”

The World Cup stadiums in Qatar are kinder and more inviting than many British female football fans might have anticipated.
This is despite the fact that Qatar has come under more intense scrutiny recently due to allegations of “discrimination” against women in a number of media publications.

The absence of hooliganism in Qatar is proof that the government shouldn’t relax its prohibitions on alcohol at football stadiums.

Jo Glover has been attending World Cup finals since South Africa in 2010. “The atmosphere here feels less tribal. Everyone is wearing their (team)colours and there is no hassle”, she says.

Chief Constable Mark Roberts, who is in charge of football policing in the UK, described the environment in Qatar as “passionate yet friendly,” similar to how it was during the summer finals of the women’s Euro 2022 competition.

Many still have vivid memories of the unruly yobs who created mayhem at Wembley stadium in July, as England advanced to the Euro 2020 final.

Women are seeing the difference that the alcohol ban makes.
