US Senators pass resolution recognising Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India

The United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC) has approved, on a bipartisan basis, a resolution that reaffirms Arunachal Pradesh’s status as an integral part of India.

Arunachal Pradesh’s status as an integral part of India has been reaffirmed by a resolution that was unanimously approved by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC). The SFRC’s approval opens the door for the resolution’s introduction on the Senate floor and potential adoption by the full chamber.

The resolution was introduced by Oregon’s Jeff Merkley and Tennessee’s Bill Haggerty, and co-sponsored by Texas’s John Cornyn, Virginia’s Tim Kaine, and Maryland’s Chris Van Hollen.

The SFRC’s approval of the resolution is yet another indication that the Senate is evolving into a potent institutional source of support for India, including by promoting the strengthening of high-level engagement with the Indian political leadership and advocating for closer defence and security ties. This is anticipated to be helpful in the future when the US executive asks the US Congress for India-specific exemptions across delicate defence and technology domains in order to strengthen bilateral ties.
