Tensions Rise in Dharavi as Locals Block BMC’s Attempt to Demolish ‘Illegal’ Mosque Section

Mumbai (PTI): A tense situation unfolded in Dharavi slum on Saturday as hundreds of residents gathered to oppose the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plan to demolish an allegedly illegal portion of a mosque.

A significant police presence has been deployed to prevent any disturbances amidst the growing tensions. Earlier in the day, a BMC team from the G-North administrative ward arrived at 90 Feet Road in Dharavi to execute the demolition. However, residents swiftly mobilized and blocked the team’s access to the mosque’s location.

The situation escalated as hundreds more gathered outside the Dharavi police station, occupying the road in protest against the BMC’s actions. Despite the heavy police presence, the situation remains tense but under control.

Currently, a delegation comprising mosque representatives, BMC officials, and Dharavi police is engaged in talks to find a resolution to the ongoing dispute. Dharavi, known as Asia’s largest slum, is a densely populated colony.
