Al Jazeera sues Israeli army in International Criminal Court (ICC)

The Qatar-based news organization Al Jazeera has sued the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) in the International Criminal Court over the killing of its journalist.

Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian journalist, was killed in May during an Israeli operation in the West Bank. Al Jazeera said on Tuesday that it had filed a complaint against Israeli soldiers at the International Criminal Court.

Al Jazeera asserts that the “deliberate killing” of Abu Akleh was “part of a wider campaign to target and silence Al Jazeera,” alluding to the bombing of the news organization’s offices in Gaza City during the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas last year.

Israel has stated that it will not assist the FBI. The outgoing prime minister, Yair Lapid, responded to the ICC appeal on Tuesday by saying in a statement that “no one will investigate IDF soldiers and no one will preach to us about morals in warfare, especially not Al Jazeera.”
